Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel

Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel (* June 28, 1557 in London, † October 19, 1595 in London) was an English nobleman and martyrs.

Life

Philip Howard, was born in 1557 as son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, and Lady Mary FitzAlan, daughter of Henry FitzAlan, 19th Earl of Arundel FitzAlan out of the house. His godfather was Philip II, his father taught Howard according to the principles of John Foxe and then sent him to the University of Cambridge.

1580 Philip Howard Earl of Arundel was. In this capacity he participated in the interrogation of Edmund Campion in the Tower of London. After his wife Anna Dacre was already converted to Catholicism in 1581, did so in 1584 Howard as well. This was viewed with suspicion at court in London, and Howard was forced to flee. He was arrested a few days later and brought as a prisoner of Elizabeth I in the Tower. In 1589 he was accused of having held an exhibition for the Spanish victory against England, and he was sentenced to death. The judgment was not enforced, and Howard remained until his natural death in 1595 in the Tower imprisoned and buried ibid. 1624 reached Howard's widow James I. the transfer of the remains to Arundel Castle. From there they were transferred to the Cathedral of Arundel in 1971, which also was the co- patronage of the newly canonized saints.

Philip Howard was in 1920 by Pius XI. beatified in 1970 was followed by the canonization by Pope Paul VI. together with the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast day is October 19th.
