Philippe Maystadt

Philippe M.P.J. Maystadt ( born March 14, 1948 in Petit- Rechain ) is a Belgian politician of the Centre Démocrate Humaniste ( cdH ) and professor at the Université catholique de Louvain ( Louvain- la -Neuve ). From 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2011, he was President of the European Investment Bank ( EIB).

Life

Maystadt was from 1977 to 1991 and from 1998 to 1999 a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives. For his party, he was from 1978 to 1979 worked as a " Political Secretary ". At the same time he was a member of the Economic Council of the Walloon Region ( CERW ). Thereafter Maystadt Secretary to the Minister of the Walloon Region. From 1980 to 1995 Maystadt was a member of the Council of the French Community. From 1980 he was also Minister of Public Administration and Science Policy, in charge of the coordination of environmental policy and from 1981 Minister for the Budget, science policy and financial planning.

Maystadt changed in the following years several times the area of ​​responsibility. He was, from 1985, Economy Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1986, Minister of Finance from 1988 and from 1995 Deputy Prime Minister, Finance and Foreign Trade Minister. In 1998, his work ended in the executive branch. He led from 1998 to 1999 the Centre Démocrate Humaniste. In 1989 he became a professor at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL ) in Louvain- la -Neuve. Maystadt was also active outside Belgium and worked from 1993 to 1998 as Chairman of the Interim Committee of the International Monetary Fund ( IMF).

He finished his mandate as EIB President on 31 December 2011. Was succeeded by the German Werner Hoyer.
