Philopappos

Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappus (* in Besa ) was a Roman senator and benefactor of Athens of the 1st and 2nd century AD

Philopappus ( " who loves his grandfather " ) came from the Attic demos Besa and was a kommagenischer Prince - his grandfather, Antiochus IV was the last king of Commagene. Philopappus ' eponymous father led a defensive struggle against the Roman troops; yet he could not prevent Commagene in 74 Roman province. Emperor Vespasian forgave him and brought him to Rome. Philopappus had a sister Iulia Balbilla that accompanied 130 as Hofpoetin Emperor Hadrian to Egypt.

Philopappus itself was titular King, Archon and Agonothetes ( race organizer ) between 75/76 and 87 /88 and Arvalbruder. Under Emperor Trajan Philopappus was included among the ex-praetors, so that he could hold the Suffektkonsulat in the year 109.

As a benefactor of the city of Athens, the Athenian citizen established him Filopappou Hill on the hill today named after him.
