Photharam District

Amphoe Photharam ( Thai: อำเภอ โพธาราม ) is a district ( Amphoe ) in the province ( Changwat ) Ratchaburi, Central Thailand. It lies in the northeast of the province.

Geography

Neighbouring districts ( from east clockwise): Amphoe Bang Phae, Damnoen Saduak, Ratchaburi and Chom Bueng Mueang Ratchaburi Province, Amphoe Tha Muang Kanchanaburi Province, Amphoe Ban Pong, in turn, in the province of Ratchaburi Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Pathom and the Nakhon Pathom province.

The most important water resource is the Maenam Mae Klong.

History

Photharam was already in the 19th century, a district ( Kwaeng ) of Mueang Ratchaburi. In 1836, the district administration of the mouth of the Bang Tanod canal ( Khlong Bang Tanod ) was moved to the eastern bank of the Mae Klong opposite the Wat Chaloem kind. On March 10, 1952, she was again postponed, and indeed to its present location within the city Photharam. 1839 toured the English missionary D. Richardson describes the area and a large market where Chinese dishes with tea leaves and people from the mountains ( see hill tribes ( South East ) ) offered tamarind in coconut oil. Thai, Laotian and Vietnamese fishermen smoked fish in shaded dugouts, and at the end of the village in Kanchanaburi were sugar factories.

Attractions

  • Wat Khongkharam ( Thai: วัด คงคา ราม ) - very old Buddhist temple ( wat ) on the banks of the Mae Klong with remarkable ancient wall paintings in ubosot.

Amphoe Photharam is divided into 19 communes ( tambon), which in turn in 156 villages ( Muban ) are divided.

  • Nong Pho ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง โพ ) consists of parts of the tambon Nong Pho.
  • Ban Sing ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บ้าน สิงห์ ) consists of all the same Tambon,
  • Ban Khong ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บ้าน ฆ้อง ) consists of the whole Tambon Ban Khong,
  • Don Sai ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ดอน ทราย ) consists of the whole tambon Don Sai.

There are twelve " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
