Photographic mosaic

A photo mosaic is an image, usually in poster or poster size, which is composed of many small pictures. The concept is based on the technique of the mosaic, in which by combining different colored parts of a pattern or image. From a distance, looking at the small images to merge into one big picture. Creating photo mosaic is made possible with computer programs in a short time.

To create a photo mosaic, many aspects must be considered. Mainly, it is important to consider the size of the frames in relation to the overall image. A frame should be so large that it is still good and sharp and recognizable acts of the effect of interest. At the same time it must not be too little, too large frames, so that the main subject is clearly visible.

Calculation example

Starting from a typical photo (4:3 ) and a poster size, for example 60 cm × 45 cm, the following relationship:

There are 60 × 60 = 3600 frames required to represent the whole picture. Here, each frame is 10 mm × 4.5 mm in size, assuming an aspect ratio of 4:3 even when the individual images. If one uses less frames, the main subject appears blurry. If one uses a smaller poster size, the 3600 frames are no longer recognizable and very small at usual Ausbelichtungsverfahren with eg 300 ppi. This is also the case in the above example of the balloon mosaic.

At freeware software in general the square center of the photo is cut and the edges are lost. This can be detrimental in many designs. It makes sense to mosaic images only from a size of 80 cm x 60 cm - 100 cm optimally × 70 cm, etc. Then frame sizes result in approximately 1000-1200 mosaic of 2 cm × 2 cm to 3 cm × 3 cm. These are then easily recognizable also on print.
