Phra Nakhon District

Phra Nakhon ( Thai พระนคร ) is one of the 50 districts (Khet ) of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. It is the central district including the "old town" of Bangkok, called the Rattanakosin Island.

Phra Nakhon was also the name of the Bangkok Province before it was merged in 1972 with Thonburi to today's " Bangkok Metropolis".

Geography

The district is bounded on the north by the Khlong Krung Kasem Phadung, to the east by the Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue and the Khlong Ong Ang, in the south and west by the Chao Phraya River.

The neighboring districts are clockwise from the north: Dusit, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Samphanthawong, and on the other bank of the Chao Phraya River are Thonburi, Bangkok Yai, Bangkok Noi and Bang Phlat.

  • Sanam Luang - Approximately in the center of the district is the geographical center of Bangkok, symbolized by the city pillar Lak Mueang at the southeast corner of Sanam Luang ( "Royal Square "). South of the Sanam Luang the Great Royal Palace ( Grand Palace ) is the Wat Phra Kaeo. Clockwise ( "Second King " ) is followed by the Silpakorn University, Wat Mahathat, the historic campus of Thammasat University and the former Palace ( Wang Na) of Uparat in which today houses the National Museum Bangkok. Directly north is the National Theatre Bangkok, and on the other side of the Khlong Lod (located below the ramp to the Phra Pinklao - Bridge ), the National Gallery Bangkok.

  • Wang Ban Mo ( Ban -Mo Palace) - located on the eastern border of the district at the Thanon Atsadang ( Atsadang Road), south of Thanon Charoen Krung
  • Wang Bang Khun Prom ( Bang Khun Prom Palace ) - located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in the northern part of the district, on the present site of the Bank of Thailand
  • In the northern part of the district lies on the now busy Thanon Wisut Kasat ( Wisut - Kasat Street), the eastern driveway to the Rama IX Bridge, Wat Indrawihan, known by its huge standing Buddha statue.
  • Northeast of the world-famous tourist center Khaosan Road is the temple of Wat Bowonniwet, the center of Thammayut community and the Buddhist Mahamakut University. In this temple was King Mongkut abbot, the current King Bhumibol Adulyadej has been ordained as a monk here.
  • South of the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, to the east of the "Big Swing " (Sao Ching Cha ) of Wat Suthat, further to the north of Wat Thepthidaram, the Wat Ratchanaddaram with the "Iron Palace " Loha Prasat and the Democracy Monument.
  • Approximately in the center of the district is the built in 1869 by King Chulalongkorn Ratchabopit Wat, a temple with unusual architecture, which is reminiscent in structure to the Phra Pathom Chedi. Diagonally opposite on the other bank of Khlong Khu Mueang Derm (also: Khlong Lot) is Wat Ratchapradit, a small temple which is worth seeing for its fine wall paintings in the Viharn.
  • On the southern tip of the district connects the Phra Phutthayotfa Bridge ( Saphan Phut short ) Phra Nakhon with Thonburi. Saphan Phut is the second bridge in Bangkok, it was opened April 6, 1932. Right on the bridge there is a large statue of the city founder King Rama I ( Phra Phutthayotfa Chulaloke ). Across the street is a bit off an old temple, Wat Ratchaburana.
  • West of the Memorial Bridge is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River to the Pak Khlong Talad lively market (market at the mouth of the channel - which the " Khlong Lod " is meant ), one of the most important vegetable and flower markets of the city.
  • The area surrounding the Phahurat Road ( พาหุรัด ) can be described as Thailand's " Little India ". The road was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ), shortly after the Indian immigrants settled there. The " Siri Guru Singh Sabha ," Thailand's first Sikh temple, was built in 1933 in a side street. Today, the Phahurat district is known for inexpensive textiles.

Traffic

  • The Rama VIII Bridge in the north of the district is one of the major road connections on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. It connects Phra Nakhon Bang Phlat.
  • The Phra Phuttha Yodfa Bridge ( popularly referred to as " Saphan Phut ", referred to in English and Memorial Bridge ) in 1932, the second bridge over the Chao Phraya River. It combines Phra Nakhon with Thonburi. To their relief 1984, Phra - Phokklao Bridge (also called " Rama VII Bridge ") was built next to it.
