Phrynos Painter

The Phrynos Painter was an Attic black-figure vase - painter, active in Athens around the time 560-545 BC.

Since the real name of the artist is not known, he received the Notnamen Phrynos painter. It is named after the potter Phrynos, of the three signed rim shells are known, probably all were painted by this artist:

  • Boston, Museum of Fine Arts 03 855
  • London, British Museum 1867.5-8.962 (B 424)
  • Torgiano, Wine Museum, 15 A

Especially the London shell is regarded as masterpieces of the black-figure style. The Phrynos painter belongs to the so-called small masters, his depictions are very fine in detail and lively in style. Despite the allocation of further shells, it is not yet able to grasp the style of the painter in more detail.
