Phycocyanin

Phycocyanin (PC) is one of the phycobiliproteins and acts as an accessory pigment in photosynthesis in blue-green algae ( cyanobacteria ), but also occurs in red algae. Color- phycocyanin purple appears to cobalt blue.

Its absorption maximum is blue-green algae ( Aphanezomenon flos aquae ) at a wavelength of 615 nm In various red algae, its absorption spectrum is bimodal, with peaks respectively at 550 nm, and - more pronounced - 615 nm

The blue chromophore group in phycocyanin is the phycocyanobilin. Is covalently linked to the protein backbone of an L-cysteine- phycocyanin.
