The Spherical Devil's Claw ( Phyteuma orbiculare ) is a plant which belongs to the genus of devil's claw ( Phyteuma ) in the family of the bellflower family ( Campanulaceae ).

Description

The Spherical Devil's claw is an herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height to 50 cm. The basal leaves are petiolate ovate to lanceolate with leaf blade, placed in or below the middle of the widest and in a rosette. The upper stem leaves are ovate-lanceolate to linear also.

The little head shaped inflorescences have a diameter of about 1.5 to 3 cm and usually contain 15 to 30 individual flowers. The outer bracts are ovate-lanceolate and usually two to four times as long as wide. The flowering period extends from May to July.

Occurrence

The lime-loving plant is often neglected grassland, fen meadows, pine forests in Europe from the Pyrenees to the Balkans. This species is found at altitudes of 2400 meters. In Austria it is often found in all provinces.
