Phytophthora

Phytophthora (from Greek phyton, "plant" and phthora, " destruction, destruction "; " the plants Devastating " ) is a genus of plant-destructive protists from the family of Peronosporaceae. Heinrich Anton de Bary described it in 1875 for the first time.
Importance
Phytophthora species are relatively host specific. They can cause considerable damage to crops. In particular, Phytophthora infestans, the causative agent of late blight of potato, led in 1845 to the total failure of the potato crop in Ireland, in the Great Famine in Ireland. It is the most important potato disease even today.
