Pi (instrument)

The Pi ( Thai: ปิ่ ) is a breakdown tongue instrument from northern Thailand.

The Pi consists of a bamboo and has a single sweeping tongue of a thin piece of metal. The gameplay is similar to a flute. The instrument can generate tones by both the blowing and by the suction, which is a continuous sound is produced.

The Pi is used as a solo instrument and can also be heard in folk music ensembles.
