Piacenzian

The Piacenzium, also Piacentien, Piacentium and Piacentin, is in the Earth's upper stratigraphic level of the Pliocene ( Neogene ). It is therefore equated with the Upper Pliocene (or Upper Pliocene ). It started before geochronological about 3.6 and ended approximately 2.588 million years and thus took about 1 million years. The Piacenzium is detached from the Gelasian; it follows the Zancleum.

Naming and history

The stage was named after the city of Piacenza (Italy). Stage and name were proposed by Karl Mayer- Eymar 1858.

Definition and GSSP

The lower limit was based on the magnetic polarity chronozone C2An ( Gaussian Chrono zone) and the extinction of planktonic foraminifera species Globorotalia margaritae and Pulleniatina primalis set. The upper limit is determined by the isotope stage 103, the base of magnetic polarity chronozone C2r ( Matuyama Chrono zone). In the calcareous nannoplankton Aussterbehorizonte the species Discoaster are pentaradiatus and Discoaster surculus. A "Global Stratotype Section and Point" ( GSSP, is about one type of profile ) is located at Punta Piccola (Sicily, Italy).
