Piątek, Łódź Voivodeship

Piątek is a village located in powiat Łęczycki in the region of Łódź, Poland. Piątek is seat of the rural commune ( gmina wiejska ).

Geography

Piątek located 34 kilometers north of Łódź and 106 kilometers west of Warsaw on the rivers Moszczenica and Malina.

The village forms the geographical center of Poland. On this fact, a memorial stone in the village with the inscription " Piątek - geometryczny środek Polski ".

History

To 1939

Piątek was first mentioned in 1136 in a papal bull of Pope Innocent II. 1339 Piątek received its town charter. The city charter was confirmed in a document from 1357, this means the Piątek to the archbishopric of Gniezno heard. In the sixteenth century, the city was known for its beer production. 1800 there were 33 breweries in the city. As part of the Third Partition of Poland Piątek fell to Prussia. In 1807 the city became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 part of Congress Poland. 1817, the city was largely destroyed by fire. During the January Uprising, the city played an important role. After the crackdown Piątek the city lost rights.

1939 to today

During the fighting in September 1939, the city was largely destroyed.

From 1975 to 1998 Piątek belonged to the Province of Płock.

Education

The municipality has a nursery ( Przedszkole ), two primary schools ( szkoła podstawowa ) and a middle school ( gimnazjum ).
