Picayune

Picayune was the designation for the six pieces of the Spanish Reals from about the 18th century in the areas of present-day U.S. states of Louisiana and Florida. The name was probably introduced by the name of a small Provencal copper coin, the Picaioun of the French who settled there in the 18th century.

The coin was also in the United States from 1793 to 1857 an acceptable means of payment. During this time, the Spanish 8 reales piece was (which corresponded to the weight of a thaler ) one U.S. dollar. The Picayune thus corresponded to 6 1/4 cents, which meant that was broadcast in some parts of the southern U.S. states the name of Picayune on the 5-cent piece.
