Pico Bolívar

Pd3pd5

The Pico Bolívar (not as often stated 5,007 ) is the highest mountain in Venezuela with 4,981 meters. It is named after the national hero of Venezuela, Simón Bolívar. The mountain is located in the northeastern foothills of the Andes near the city of Merida, capital of the state of the same name.

By starting in Mérida cable car ( teleférico ) you could drive up to Pico Espejo at an altitude of 4,765 meters and from there had a direct view of the Pico Bolívar. The cable car, which consisted of four sections and was taken in 1960 in full length in operation, was the longest and highest cable car in the world. She was decommissioned in 2008 due to old age.

The first ascent was made either in 1935 by Enrique Bourgoin, H. Márquez Molina and Domingo Peña or a year later, on February 3, 1936, German mountaineer. The Ascension in 1935 is disputed.
