Pieniny National Park (Slovakia)

The Pieniny National Park (Slovak Pieninský Národný park, abbr PIENAP ) is a national park in Slovakia. He covers the Slovak side of the mountain Pieniny (Slovak Pieniny ) and covers an area of 37.49 km ², the smallest of the nine Slovak national parks. The size of the protected area is 223.68 km ², however, and covers a large part of the region Zamagurie. The park was established on 16 January 1967, and connects to the established already in the 1930s the National Park on the Polish side. The seat of government is located in the village of Cerveny Kláštor.

The National Park is located in the Prešov Region of the political district of the Okresy Kežmarok and Stara Ľubovňa in the traditional landscape Zips (Slovak Spis ). The highest mountain is the Vysoke skalky (1050 m nm ) on the border with Lesnica. In the Dunajec gorge cut is the Holica (828 m nm); it is slightly lower than the famous mountain Trzy Korony ( 982 m nm) on the Polish side.

The most famous attraction of the park is the border river Dunajec, which runs through the Pieniny in a transverse valley. There are many opportunities for hiking. On the river rafting is operated. Shortly before the runoff of the Dunajec in Polish territory flows the brook Lesnický creek, which also flows in a deep gorge cut almost 300 meters.

But also cultural landscape of the National Park has something to offer. The monastery Cerveny Kláštor ( German Red Monastery ) in the village of Cerveny Kláštor, a former Carthusian, later Camaldolese monastery, today the site of a museum. The community Lesnica is a gateway to the National Park. Further west in the protection zone is the highlander village Osturňa, which was declared a folk architecture reserve due to the many preserved buildings goralischer.

Of the specially protected areas remained for a new zoning in four zones in 2004 solely for the national natural monument Aksamitka (since 1979 ), a karst cave, left. Until the dissolution of the following areas were specifically protected:

  • Národné Prírodné rezervácie (NPR, National Nature Monuments)
  • Prírodné rezervácie (PR, nature reserves )

Since 2004 has a 13.01 km ² large area of the Natura 2000 sites (code: SKUEV0337 ).
