Pierre Boitard

Pierre Boitard (* 1789, † 1859) was a French botanist and geologist.

From Boitard comes one of the first descriptions and classifications of the bag devil. The scientist George Harris described the Tasmanian Devil on the first occasion in 1807 and gave it the scientific name Didelphis ursina. 1838, the devil was renamed Dasyurus by Richard Owen in Laniarius. However, the name was not long. Pierre Boitard ordered the type of the genus Sarcophilus to 1841 and named in the style according to Sarcophilus harrisii.

In addition to the reclassification of the bag devil Pierre Boitard is also known for its fictional nature story Paris avant les hommes (Paris before the people ). She appeared only after Pierre Boitards death in 1861. In this story he describes the life of a prehistoric ape and the same human ancestors, whose life took place in the region of Paris.
