Pierre Joseph Thuot ( born May 19, 1945 in Groton, Connecticut, United States) is a former American astronaut.

Thuot 1977, he received a BS in Physics from the United States Naval Academy in 1985 and a Masters Degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. In 2004 he received a degree from the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.

In 1977, Thuot to the United States Navy and was trained as a naval aviator. After deployments on aircraft carriers USS John F. Kennedy and USS Independence in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, he graduated from the Navy Fighter Weapons School ( TOPGUN ) and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He then worked as a test pilot and pilot instructor.

Astronauts activity

In June 1985, Thuot was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. He checked software in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory and was speaker connection ( CAPCOM ) for numerous shuttle missions. He was chief astronaut of the Astronaut Office for construction and maintenance operations of the International Space Station ( ISS). He headed the department Mission Support and oversaw the Astronaut Training the selection of 1995.

STS -36

Thuot began on 28 February 1990 with the space shuttle Atlantis for the first time into space. It was a secret satellite of the U.S. Air Force suspended in a low orbit, from where this digital reconnaissance satellite should monitor most of the earth's surface.

STS -49

On 7th May 1992 Thuot flew as a mission specialist on the maiden flight of the space shuttle Endeavour for the second time into space. The aim of this mission was the two years previously launched communications satellite Intelsat VI -F3 to recover for a repair. Only with the third spacewalk (EVA ) was finally the satellite be captured by hand. Then Intelsat received a new apogee, so that he could achieve an intended geostationary orbit. In another EVA structures and tools were tested.

STS -62

On 4 March 1994 Thuot began as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia for his third space flight. Payload were the United States Microgravity Payload 2 ( USMP ) and Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology 2 ( ODST ). These payloads the effects of weightlessness could be explored.

In June 1995, Thuot left NASA and returned to the Navy. Later he was the chair of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of the United States Naval Academy. In February 1999, he was Vice President, Administration at Orbital Sciences Corporation, Launch Systems Group. He then worked as a Senior Manager for Space & Communications at Global Aerospace and Defense Industy. He is currently President and CEO of HawkEye.

Pierre Thuot is married and has two children.
