Pierre Pica

Pierre Pica ( born January 5, 1951 in Nice ) is a French linguist and a researcher ( Chargé de Recherche ) at the CNRS ( Centre National de Recherche Scientifique ) in Paris. His specialty is the theoretical linguistics and in particular the comparison of the syntax.

Research

Pica has focused his research on the concept of parameter linguistics. It has also been found that the respective properties are derived from the reflexive morphological property. He is currently studying the distinction between the internal and external aspects of the Faculty of Language and is also working on a fine-grained distinction between competence and performance. In the last ten years Pica has intensified its work on Munduruku ( an indigenous language in Para State, Brazil). Inter alia he has developed in collaboration with Stanislas Dehaene and Elizabeth Spelke, a study on numerical expressions and numeration Munduruku. This study highlights the importance of these data for the study of the interaction of speech and of the preverbal ' core knowledge '. This research is in contrast to the hypothesis related to the Sapir and Whorf derived from relativism, which tends to reduce the knowledge and culture in part, to a small set of universal principles and intuitions. The research has led to a number of publications in the journal Science.
