Pierre Tarin

Pierre Tarin (* 1721 in Courtenay ( according to other sources 1725), † 1761 or 1793) was a French physician, translator, and one of the major contributor to the Encyclopédie in the areas of anatomy and physiology.

Life and work

Tarin was born the son of a merchant in Courtenay at Montargis. He studied medicine in Paris, but probably not finish.

After 1747 he developed for a few years a great activity: he taught anatomy, translated Albrecht von Haller Primae linae physiologiae and Josiah wide Syndesmologia Brecht into French, gave Herman Boerhaave six-volume Elementa out chemiae and wrote at least five other medical works. These are mainly anatomica its 1750 first published Adversaria containing the first pictorial representation of the human nervous system. Medical historian Paul Delaunay sees Tarin one of the best anatomists of the 18th century.

As a contributor to the Encyclopédie he was already recruited before Diderot and d' Alembert took over the editorship. In the volumes 1 to 11 more than 370 articles are marked with its author abbreviation " L". In addition, Tarin also chose illustrations of the anatomy of the plate volume and provided them with explanatory comments. After his band 7 posts are sparse, but suspected Jacques Roger, that anonymous contributions as the article physiology, are praised in the Boerhaave and Haller, come from Tarin. A thorough reappraisal of the performance Tarins for the Encyclopédie is from the past.
