The Piesau is a 7 km long right tributary of the light in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park / Thuringian Slate Mountains.

The source of Piesau is located a few kilometers south of the community Piesau close to the Rennsteig the watershed between Thuringia and Franconia.

History and mouth

The Piesau arises initially as Piesau pebble creek and makes its way through the Thuringian Forest Nature Park north to the community Piesau. There she joins the Bear Creek ( ⊙ 50.5153611.22223 ) and now flows as Piesau further north to the Piesauknie ( 50.5238211.22275 ⊙ ) at the eastern entrance of the municipality light ( district fixed and pond ).

Then it changes its course to the west. There, the B 281 follows the valley of the Piesau. After about 2 km, it flows through the Piesau Viaduct to Walldorf ( ⊙ 50.5238211.22275 ) near the former station light (East). In the center of the municipality light of the Piesau leads into the light and follows the Lichtetal to Leibis - light with pre-dam Deesbach to the confluence with the Schwarza.

Naming

According to ancient traditions, the river was formerly called Schmiedebach. This is the underflow in the area of present-day hamlet of fixed and Pond ( light ). The current flow Piesau name appears only after the foundation of the town Piesau 1627, derived from the founder name Pisa.

Particularity

The slopes of the valleys of Piesau and light fall off steeply and are often more than 100 m high.

Piesau, light and numerous tributaries from the surrounding valleys have been known for centuries for its deposits of gold and soap are among the richest gold rivers of Germany. Amateur prospectors are still occasionally successful.
