Pietro Gasparri

Pietro Cardinal Gasparri ( born May 5, 1852 in Capovallazza di Ussita, Macerata, Italy Province; † November 18, 1934 in Rome) was Secretary of State Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

Pietro Gasparri studied the subjects of philosophy and Catholic theology at various universities of Rome. He received on May 31, 1877 Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a personal secretary to Cardinal Teodolfo Mertelsmann as well as a professor of canon law at Rome and Paris. In 1896 he was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Investigation of the validity of Anglican ordinations.

1898 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Titular Archbishop of Caesarea in Palestine and Apostolic Delegate for Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. The bishop ordained Pietro Gasparri by Cardinal François Richard. In 1901 he was Kurialsekretär for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, 1904 Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the codification of Canon Law. In 1907, Pope Pius X in the College of Cardinals to. As a cardinal priest, he received the titular church of San Bernardo alle Terme, 1915, he moved but as a cardinal priest, the titular church and took the title of San Lorenzo in Lucina. Pietro Gasparri in 1925 received the appointment as Cardinal Prefect of the Kurialkongregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. The general public he was known as a signatory of the Lateran Treaty with Benito Mussolini on 11 February 1929, which ended the dispute between Italy and the Vatican. In December 1929, he became President of the Commission of Cardinals in preparation for the codification of the Oriental canon. He resigned in February 1930 as Cardinal Secretary of State.

Pietro Gasparri died on 18 November 1934 in Rome and was buried in the cemetery of Ussita.
