Pietro Sambi

Pietro Sambi (* June 27, 1938 in Sogliano al Rubicon, Forlì -Cesena, Italy, † July 27, 2011 in Baltimore, United States) was a diplomat of the Holy See.

Life

Pietro Sambi received on 14 March 1964, the priesthood, and then received a doctorate in theology. and Dr. iur. can. at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 1969 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Pope Paul VI. gave him on 27 January 1971 honorary title Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). Sambi was in Cameroon, Cuba (1974 ) and Algeria ( 1978) worked before he became active in the Apostolic Nunciature in Nicaragua in 1979, this. During the phase of transition from Anastasio Somoza Debayle on the Sandinista government led by Daniel Ortega In 1978 he moved to Belgium. On June 18, 1982 Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness. In 1984 he worked at the Apostolic Nunciature in India.

John Paul II appointed him on October 10, 1985 Titular Archbishop of Bellicastrum and appointed him as Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Burundi. In 1991 he moved than Pro-Nuncio to Indonesia. 1998 Sambi Apostolic Nuncio to Israel and Cyprus and apostolic delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine. 2005 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. for permanent observer at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC and nuncio to the United States.

Sambi was Conventual Chaplain of the Order of Malta in the United States.

He died of lung surgery in the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and was buried on August 2, 2011 in his hometown, Sogliano al Rubicon.
