Pietro Tribuno

Pietro Tribuno († 911) was, according to tradition the 17th Doge of Venice. His reign lasted from 889-911.

Tribuno was the nephew of the Doge Pietro Tradonico. He was elected from the ranks of the families that came through trade to wealth and began to distinguish themselves from the rest of the population. These families formed the nucleus of the noble families ( nobili ), from which it turned out was the later Venetian oligarchy.

During this period began with the construction of the Campanile in St. Mark's Square today.

Tribuno organized the defense of Venice and the surrounding lagoon settlements against the Hungarian invasion. He fastened the Rialto and made the Grand Canal by tensioning a chain for ships impassable. The Hungarians, who had already proceeded to Chioggia and Malamocco and Pellestrina had looted on the Lido could be stopped by the Venetian fleet in June 900 at Albiola and repulsed. The Byzantine emperor Leo the way Tribuno honored because of this success the following year with the title of protospatario.
