Pieve Fosciana

Pieve Fosciana is a town with 2394 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lucca. The municipality is located on a small plane to the left of the Serchio valley in the Garfagnana. It also includes the fractions Bargecchia, Capraia, Pontecosi and Sillico.

The neighboring municipalities are Camporgiano, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Castiglione di Garfagnana, Fosciandora, Pievepelago (MO), San Romano in Garfagnana and Villa Collemandina.

History

The place was first mentioned at the time of the Lombards in the 8th century. The parish church was a center of the area and gave the place its name. Pieve means parish. In the 15th century the place that belonged until then to Lucca, the dominion of the Este family joined. In the Napoleonic era the places Sillico, Bargecchia and Pontecosi were incorporated. Towards the end of World War II was Pieve Fosciana in the Gothic Line.

Attractions

In the district Sillico is a medieval fortified tower, which served to protect the village until the 15th century. The Romanesque parish church houses some medieval pieces of equipment, including an Annunciation by Andrea Della Robbia. In the district Pontecosi is the medieval bridge Ponte della Madonna.
