Pigi, Rethymno

Pigi (Greek Πηγή ( f sg ) ) is a village in the municipality of Arkadi in the Municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete.

Location

Pigi is just over nine kilometers east of Rethymno, about two kilometers from the coast and about one kilometer south of highway 90. Nearest place is Adele approximately 1.2 kilometers to the west. Agios Dimitrios is located about 800 meters to the southeast, Pighianos Kambos near the coast along the old national road.

History

The earliest mention as Pigi comes from the Venetian period. During Ottoman times, the place was first inhabited by Orthodox Christians and Muslims.

The rural community of Pigi ( Κοινότητα Πηγής Kinotita Pigis ) was founded in 1925. With the exception of a territorial change in the following year and the recognition of Pighianos Kambos in 1981, the rural community consisted of three villages until 1997. Through the implementation of local government reform after the Kapodistrias program Pigi was with eleven other rural communities municipality of Arkadi merged ( Δήμος Αρκαδίου ). This in turn was under the administrative reform of 2010 in the town of Rethymno, since Pigi has the status of a village ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Topiki Kinotita ).

Others

The public buses of KTEL network operate daily connections between Amnatos and Rethymno (trains to Kyrianna and Loutra ).
