Pignolata

Pignolata is a dessert in the form of a layered desserts from Sicily.

The Pignolata is produced mainly in eastern Sicily, but is also known on the adjacent mainland at the southern tip of Italy, in Calabria. In Sicily it is typical of Messina. The Pignolata is often served on Christmas and eaten.

Preparation

Of flour and eggs, a dough is kneaded, which is formed in small balls or small rolls. These pieces of dough are fried in fat and stacked to form a pyramid. The pyramid is each half covered with chocolate and powdered sugar. In another variant of caramelized sugar with flavors, such as lemon flavor mixed and passed through the pyramid.
