Pihla

Pihla is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kõrgessaare ( Kõrgessaare vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Pihla has 14 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). The town is located 13 km southwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel )

In the village 18 km- long flows Pihla -Bach ( Pihla oja ). It rises in the bog of Pihla ( Pihla raba ) and flows into the Baltic Bay Reigi ( Reigi Laht ).

Church and parsonage

At the present village area of Pihla heard the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jesus Reigi with its historic cemetery. The original church was built before the year 1626. 1690 was a new church made ​​of wood. It was used by the Swedish-speaking community of Reigi. Since the deportation of nearly all Hiiumaa Estonia Sweden to Ukraine in 1781 the church is purely estnischsprachig.

The present church building was built (1744-1811) 1799-1802 the Baltic German nobleman Otto Reinhold Ludwig von Ungern- Sternberg. It was remodeled in 1899.

In the vicinity is the pastorate under monumental protection. In 1882, the local pastor Immanuel channel founded ( 1854-1914 ) where the first public library of Hiiumaa.
