Orange hawkweed ( Hieracium aurantiacum )

The Red Orange hawkweed ( Hieracium aurantiacum ) is a plant of the genus hawkweed ( Hieracium ) in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae).

Description

The perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of growth between 20 and 40 centimeters, making both above and underground runners. The stems often terminate in two to twelve people, crowded corymbs. In each flower heads many yellow-orange to orange- red sit together, fünfzipfelige ray florets. Bloom time is from June to August.

Occurrence

This plant prefers slightly acidic, nutrient-poor oligotrophic grasslands, dwarf shrub heath or pasture, cultivated is also found in rock gardens. It is native to the mountains of Central Europe, Southern Europe and Northern Europe at altitudes 1100-3000 meters above sea level. In other areas of Central Europe the species is wild.

Others

The orange-red flowers are visited by preference of similarly colored butterflies, especially the Little Fox, the scarce copper and Fritillary. This is probably for camouflage.
