Pinchas Zukerman

Pinchas Zukerman (* July 16, 1948 in Tel Aviv) is an Israeli violinist, violist and conductor.

Life

Pinchas Zukerman's family survived the Warsaw Ghetto and the Auschwitz concentration camp. After the war, his father gave him his first music lessons. With eight years Pinchas began his training at the Israeli Conservatory in Tel Aviv. An American-Israeli Foundation enabled him then to continue his studies at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. When Ilona Feher, he studied violin. In 1961 he learned during the first Israel Festival Pablo Casals and Isaac Stern know. On their advice, he went in 1962 to New York City to study at the Juilliard School of Music. 1966 debuted Zukerman during the American Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto ( South Carolina ). In 1967 he was co- winner of the International Competition Leventritt together with the Korean violinist Kyung Wha Chung. In 1969, he debuted in Europe. From then on, took his international career as a violinist and violist a steep upswing, from 1971 as a conductor, especially with the English Chamber Orchestra. In 1977 he played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim Violin Concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven.

From 1980 to 1987 Zukerman was the conductor of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Since 1998 he has been chief conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. Zukerman was married to the actress Tuesday Weld.
