Pink head pigeon in West Timor

The pink head pigeon ( Ducula rosacea ) is a Southeast Asian representatives of the bird species of the Great fruit pigeons ( Meliphagidae ).

Occurrence and habitat

The species is found on most of the Lesser Sunda Islands, the South Moluccas and some other small islands of the Malay Archipelago. The westernmost point of the distribution are the Karimunjawa Islands, north of Java. The southernmost point is the island of Timor, the easternmost the Kei Islands, the northernmost island of the Bacan, as only the northern Moluccas. On Wetar the pink head pigeon is the most common pigeon of the island. Also on Tanahjampea, Timor and the Tanimbarese Islands is the kind commonplace. On Atauro the pigeon is not common, but widespread at altitudes from 250 m in forest areas. The relatively large pigeon is always victims of hunters, which is why it is considered at risk to be low, even if the hunting pressure is not present throughout the entire range.

The pink head pigeon is a state bird. She lives in forests, bushland, mangroves and fields up to 1100 m altitude.
