Pío Leyva

Pío Leyva ( born May 5, 1917 in Morón, Cuba as Wilfredo Pascual, † March 22, 2006 in Havana ) was a Cuban musician.

Life

Leyva began his artistic career at the age of eight years as a bongo player. In 1932 he first appeared as a singer in an orchestra in his hometown. From 1953 he worked as a singer in various bands in Havana and worked among others with the composer Compay Segundo together. This collaboration has numerous hits such as Chan Chan emerged. In 1997, both Ry Cooder did for music project Buena Vista Social Club together again, which became internationally famous by Wim Wenders film ' the same name. Since 2000, Leyva was several years in a row with the production " Live From Buena Vista " on tour in Europe. Compiled from sizes from the film as well as previously unknown musicians, emerged from these tours the band " Soneros de Verdad " under the leadership of singer Luis Frank Arias.

Overall Leyva worked on 25 albums in his musical career.

On 22 March 2006 Pío Leyva died of a heart attack.
