There are ground-nesting birds, their nests comprises up to six eggs. The genus can be attributed to 40 species, making them the most species-rich genus within the family. The taxonomic assignment of individual species and subspecies, however, is debatable; some authors include fewer species in this genus.

Pieper are represented almost all the world, she only lacks in the tropical rain forests in the drier deserts and on the Antarctic continent. In the Subarctic of Petschorapieper, the Meadow Pipit and Red-throated Pipit occur. In the sub-Antarctic Giant Pieper and Correnderapieper breed.
