In the Pirc Defense Ufimtsev [ pirts - ] ( Yugoslav defense or Yugoslavian ) is an opening of the chess game.

The Pirc Ufimtsev - defense is one of the half- open games and is classified in the ECO codes under the keys B07- B09. It is often just referred to as the Pirc Defense, however, is officially named after the master players Vasja Pirc and Anatoli Ufimtsev.

Basics

The Pirc Ufimtsev - defense begins with the moves:

1 e2- e4 d7 - d6 2 d2 -d4 Ng8 - f6 3 Nb1 - c3 g7- g6

And is at a grandmaster level as comparatively risky opening. Similar to the King's Indian Defence White is first left to the center and taken with Fianchetto, a knight on f6 and the farmers d6 a passive collecting position. Due to the low key black construction are more white (main) sequels are available:

  • Byrne - system: 4 Lc1 - g5 White wants f4 post these runners before the farmers
  • Runner System: 4 Lf1 - c4
  • Classical system: 4 Sg1 -f3 ( Development Plan: Lf1 - e2, 0-0 )
  • Fianchetto System: 4 g2 - g3 ( Development Plan: Lf1 - g2, Sg1 - e2, f2 - f4 and possibly 0-0 )
  • F3 - system: 4 f2 -f3 (analogous to the Sämisch variant in the King's Indian support center and will be white with h2 - h4 and g2 - g4 advance, if necessary, on the kingside ).
  • 150- Attack: 4 Lc1 -e3 ( Development Plan: Dd1 -d2, f2 -f3, castling and kingside attack, similar to the Yugoslav Attack in the Dragon variation ), as in the famous game Kasparov - Topalov, Wijk aan Zee 1999.
  • Three peasant Attack: 4 f2 - f4 ( direct action in the center and space savings with e4 - e5 and / or f4 - f5 ) Bf8 - g7 5 Sg1 -f3. The immediate counter-attack on the white center c7 - c5 leads to complications such as 6 Lf1 - b5 Bc8 - d7 7 e4 e5 Nf6 - g4 Lb5xd7 8 9 d4 -d5 Dd8xd7 d6xe5 10 h2 - h3 e5 -e4 11 h3xg4. With 5 ... 0-0 Black first closes off its development before moving on to other activities.
  • 4 Lf1 - e2 Bf8 - g7 5 h2 - h4 or g2 - g4 5

The last four variants usually lead to tactical positions and aim to direct attack on the king, especially during pull the Fianchetto system and the classic way of playing a quieter, positional play structure according to.

Parallels to other openings

The almost identical Modern Defence ( 1 e2- e4 g7- g6 ) differs mainly by the retention of the knight on g8, where he stays for a long time before he is pulled away later in other circumstances. Since this is not the train 3 Nb1 - c3 is forced by 2 ... Ng8 - f6, more or less, White can take other options than in the Pirc, for example, 3 c2 - c4 play. After that frequently arises the King's Indian defense. In these three openings, White has with his peasant center space advantage but Black can the farmer advances e7 - e5 or c7 - c5 set against it.

A self- opening represents the Czech system (also called Pribyl - Pirc ) shows that arises after the moves 1 e2 -e4 d7 - d6 2 d2 -d4 Ng8 - f6 3 Nb1 - c3 c7 - c6. The main variants are:

  • 4 f2 - f4 Qd8 - a5 (followed by 5 e4 - e5, Lf1 -d3 or Lc1 -d2 )
  • 4 Sg1 -f3 - g4 Bc8 to play with the plan of the Black e7 - e6 and d7 -d5.

Furthermore, to find in today's tournament practice following variant:

  • 2 d2 -d4 Ng8 - f6 3 Nb1 - c3 e7 - e5

This leads to 4 d4xe5 an independent variant or after 4 Sg1 -f3 to Philidor Defence.

After Jörg Hickl the variant is balanced by 4 d4xe5 d6xe5 5 Dd1xd8 Ke8xd8, since the black confinement is dissolved. Black normally builds up with Be6, Bd6, Ke7, h6, a6, Nc6 and then, by means Thb8 ( the d-line is indeed blocked by the runner ) attack on the queenside. The Doppelbauer after 6 Lf1 - c4 e6 7 Bc8 Lc4xe6 f7xe6 no real weakness as he controls important fields in the center, which could otherwise occupy the white knight. In general, the transition is therefore considered in the Philidor Defence as promising.
