Pirrewaldsänger ( Basileuterus ignotus )

The Pirrewaldsänger ( Basileuterus ignotus ) is a small passerine bird in the genus Basileuterus in the family of warblers ( Parulidae ). This type forms with the Black -cheeked Warbler ( Basileuterus melanogenys ) is a super species. Some authors consider the Pirrewaldsänger and the Black -cheeked Warbler as conspecific. The small distribution area is located in southeastern Panama, Colombia. The IUCN lists the species as " endangered" ( vulnerable ).

Features

Pirrewaldsänger reach a body length of 13 to 13.5 centimeters. Adults and fledglings from the first year to have a reddish- brown upper head, narrow black crest side strips that are connected to each other on the forehead and broad, pale, greenish-yellow over black eye stripe, which are also connected to each other on the forehead and pull down to the neck. The ear-coverts are mottled olive and blackish. The top plumage is olive green, the wings and tail are dark brown with olive green feather edges and the underside feathers are creamy- yellow with faded olive flanks and sides of breast. The legs are flesh-colored yellow, the beak is flesh colored with a blackish beak first.

Resources, nutrition and reproduction

Are widespread in the mountains Pirrewaldsänger Alto de Nique and Cerro Tacarcuna in the province of Darién in Panama near the border to Colombia as well as in the northwestern Chocó in Colombia. They inhabit mountain forests above 1200 meters and mainly from an altitude of 1400 meters. Their diet consists mainly of insects, which they unearth in heights of 2 and 10 meters in the middle and upper regions of the trees. In their wanderings they are usually observed in pairs or in small groups. Sometimes they join other bird species such as the Black -cheeked Buschtangare ( Chlorospingus inornatus ).

About nesting and hatching and fledging period has not been investigated. In July, adult birds were spotted during feeding just fledged young birds on the mountain Cerro Pirre in Darién.
