Pirri

José Martínez Sánchez, player name Pirri ( born March 11, 1945 in Ceuta, Spain), is a former Spanish footballer. He spent most of his career at Real Madrid.

Career

Pirri started his footballer career in his hometown at the clubs Imperio de Riffien, Sociedad Deportiva Ceuta and Atlético de Ceuta before División in 1963 in the Segunda moved to Granada CF. His success there, and the convening of the amateur national team, Real Madrid drew attention to the then 19 -year-old player, and so he moved in 1964 to the Brussels residents. The club was located at that time in a restructuring phase. Stars such as Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás were getting on in years and have been successively by young Spaniard as Amancio, Grosso, zoco, Sanchis sen. Pirri or even replaced. This newly formed team finally won by the nickname "el Madrid yé yé - " after five years of drought in 1966 for the sixth time the European Cup of Champions. After numerous successes with the Merengues Pirri finally changed in 1980, when 35 -year-old, to Mexico for Puebla FC. He also finished his medical studies and returned as team physician to Real Madrid. Between 1996 and 2000 he served as athletic director for the club.

National

Pirri played 41 times for the Spanish national team and took their part in the World Championships in 1966 and 1978.

Anecdotes

Pirri was especially by his fighting spirit and will to win a name. He played for example the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup 1970/71 due to a broken collarbone with a bandaged arm, and the final of the Copa del Rey in 1975 with a broken jaw.

For this reason, the club gave him the Laureada ( to German laurel wreath ), a testament to the Real Madrid rewarded special sacrifice. Except Pirri she wears only Gregorio Benito.
