The Baptistery in Pisa (Italian Baptistry di Pisa) is the baptistery of the cathedral in Pisa.

The detached building was begun in 1152 by Diotisalvi as a supplement to the cathedral in Romanesque style on a circular ground plan modeled after the Anastasis rotunda of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The building has a two-story interior columns wreath of 12 pillars and columns that separates a kreuzgratgewölbten handling from the central region of the inner dome. This indoor dome consists of a truncated cone which was originally open up. After a financially -induced building freeze at the end of the 12th century, the exterior cladding was continued until 1260 by Niccolò Pisano and Giovanni Pisano, from 1277 to 1284. While the first level yet the style of the cathedral has been adapted they built the second floor with arcades in the lush style of Gothic. The outer segment dome, which partly covers the inner dome, was built until 1358 by Cellino di Nese and Zibellinus, a builder from Bologna. Here were added to the building added a third outer basement. 1394 closed to the open center of the old dome cone with a small vault, which brought the building to its present total height.

The Baptistery in Pisa is the largest baptistery in Christian history. There is a total of 54 meters high and has a circumference of 107 meters.

The visible today copies of busts over the arcade represent prophets and apostles, the originals of which were created by Giovanni Pisano. On the top of the church, a three-meter- high bronze statue of John the Baptist stands that was fixed at the beginning of the 15th century there. The main entrance is flanked by two decorated with reliefs columns and gives the life story of John the Baptist again.

In the middle of the church is an octagonal baptistery, which was created by Guido da Como Bigareli 1246. 1929 statue of John the Baptist was added by Italo Griselli. The marble pulpit in the Baptistery is from Nicola Pisano from the period 1255-1260. Seven pillars support the hexagonal pulpit basin in which the lectern is carried by an eagle. On display are also prophets, the five virtues and John the Baptist. Are located on the parapet of the pulpit five reliefs with scenes Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation in the Temple, the Crucifixion and the Last Judgement of Christ's life.

The baptistery has a particular resonance behavior by its cylindrical design. Occasionally, one of the guards is true in several different vocal tones, which are joined by the echo in building a sound experience in combination.

As in many medieval religious buildings of the number of architectural elements with respect (for example, columns, supports, etc. ) attached particular importance and brought their numbers with numbers that appear in the Bible in context, in the Pisan Baptistery of the symbolism of numbers.
