Pithecheirops

Pithecheirops otion is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). It is related presumably closely with the Affenfußratten ( Pithecheir ).

Of this kind only a single animal is known to be a young male, which in northern Borneo ( Sabah ) was found in 1991. It had a body length of 11.3 cm, a tail length of 11.7 centimeters and a weight of 36 grams. His fur was reddish on the back, the flanks were brighter than the top, the belly was whitish. The tail is hairless except for the front part and can be used as a prehensile tail.

The animal was found in a rain forest in around 150 meters above sea level. The conformation suggests that the species is an arboreal and can climb well.

About the level of risk is not known, the IUCN lists the species under "too little data available " ( data deficient ).
