Pitlochry

Pitlochry (Gaelic Baile Chloichridh - City of guard stone ) is a municipality ( Pittsburgh ) in Perthshire, Scotland, of about 2,500 inhabitants, situated on the River Tummel. Pitlochry is now essentially a tourist resort and welcomes its guests with the Gaelic greeting on the outskirts " Ceud mile Failte " - 100,000 Welcome ".

History

In the nearby forest Allean the remains of a ring forts find from the 8th century, called " The Black Spout ".

The historical origins of Pitlochry go back to the year 208 AD, when the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus pushed forward to the Moray Firth and built to protect troops in the side valleys forts. The Picts built a symbol stone ( Dunfallandy Stone) in which there later incurred, originally separate place, whose church, Moulin Kirk, is called in the year 1180. 1511 Moulin was appointed Burgh.

The place itself was Pitlochry, after General George Wade was built in 1725 a road through the town to develop the rural areas of Scotland after the Jacobite rebellions of 1715. In 1842 Queen Victoria visited the nearby Blair Castle. Thus, also increased the level of awareness of the place. In 1863, a station was set up, and Pitlochry became a popular tourist destination. Following was the Atholl Palace Hotel as today existing local landmark. 1947 Pitlochry to the District ( Pittsburgh ) has been appointed. The same year also saw the start of construction of a dam to generate energy from hydropower. The dam dams on the River Tummel to Loch Faskally and has a 311 m long salmon ladder. Faskally hole and the fish ladder are among the most popular tourist attractions. In 1951, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre was opened, which was originally played in a tent. Today's theater building dates from 1981.

The place was a 2003 winner of the horticulture competition " Britain in Bloom " in the category Small Country Town.

In addition to the theater and the hydroelectric power plant Pitlochry is now the site of two whiskey distilleries ( Edradour (outside ) and Blair Athol ( on the main road ) ) and a microbrewery.

By Pitlochry lead the A9 (Inverness - Perth ) and the Highland Railway Line Edinburgh / Glasgow- Inverness.
