Piwnica pod Baranami

The Piwnica pod Baranami (Keller for the rams ) in Krakow was a cabaret in the People's Republic of Poland. The theater was built in the eponymous former aristocratic palace in the wake of the liberalization policy under Wladyslaw Gomulka in 1956. Founder was a group of students at the Krakow art academies. In the next 40 years under the aegis of impresario Piotr Skrzynecki a multitude of small pieces and songs were performed and cabaret evenings organized, qualified by the great tradition of Krakow's cabarets from the time of the turn of the century. Until the death Skrzyneckis in 1997, the most famous Polish musicians and actors have performed there, many a major career began there. These included the jazz musician Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Kurylewicz, the chanson singer Ewa Demarczyk, Marek Grechuta and Grzegorz Turnau.
