Piz Cengalo

The Piz Cengalo (Italian: Pizzo Cengalo ) is a 3'369 m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Bergeller Alps in the south of the canton of Graubünden. About the Summit is the boundary between Switzerland and Italy.

Routes and ascents

The normal route leads from the Gianettihütte to Cengalo Pass, thence over the ridge, to the summit. The first ascent was made on July 25, 1866 by Douglas Freshfield and C. Comyns Tucker leader François Devouassoud from Chamonix.

The most famous climbing route is the Gaiser Lehmann route across the North West pillar (1100 m, 25 pitches, difficulty V or VI, base Sasc Furä Hut )

Others

On December 28, 2011, there arrived in the summit area to a huge rock fall, in which about one million cubic meters of rock into Val Bondasca rushed. Number of deaths in uninhabited valley not to harm, but the trail Vial between Sasc spilled Furä and Sciorahütte. The road has since been closed due to high risk of rock falls.
