Piz Uccello

The Piz Uccello ( German bird horn ) is a mountain north-east of the village of San Bernardino in the canton of Grisons. He is 2'724 m high and lies on the border between the Valle Mesolcina and Rheinwald.

The San Bernardino Pass was previously named Bird Mountain Pass, his ancient Celtic name was Ouxello ( = height).

The distinctive pyramid- shaped mountain is regarded as the symbol of the village of San Bernardino. Its southeast side rises from Val Vignun forth to evenly, while its north-western side drops almost vertically to the San Bernardino Pass and against Rhine. In Val Vignun on the south side of the Piz Uccello is the headwaters of the Ri de Fontanalba.

A well-marked mountain path (T2 ) leads through the Val Vignun to Alp Cassina since vignun ( 2,115 m). Since autumn 2006 the way from the Val Vignun from is marked as Alpine Route. The summit can be done easily via a narrow, steep path to the ridge. The last few meters to the summit need to tread care (T4 ): The trail leads across slates that can easily start to slip.

In winter, the Piz Uccello 's a popular destination for ski touring.
