Pizol

The Pizol (Romanesque for High peak ), formerly also Piz Sol, is a 2,844 m high mountain massif in Sarganserland in the canton of St. Gallen. It is located 16 km northwest of Chur, between the Weisstannental, the Tamina Valley and the Calfeisental. Other peaks in the massif are the Sazmartinshorn ( 2'827 m), the Zanaihorn ( 2'821 m), the black horns ( 2,645 m) and the Muntaluna ( 2'422 m).

Below the summit of Pizol is about 400 meters long Pizol glacier.

As Pizol is commonly also the hiking and skiing area designated on the northeast side of the Pizol above the villages of Wang and Bad Ragaz.

Routes

The summit can be reached from Giger Waldsee, in the south of the Alp Tersol, the Pizol saddle and the west flank. From the north leads to the increase of the Wildseelücke and Pizol lip on the top. The previously used route across the glacier Pizol was replaced due to rockfall hazard due east extending, tightrope secured at some points the way.

Tourism

The Pizol area was developed in the years 1953/54, each by a cable car from Wang and Bad Ragaz. The then oldest funicular of Switzerland Bad Ragaz presented in the spring of 2007 the operation and was replaced by a new 8-person gondola. The path leads to the central station Pardiel to 1,633 m. From there, a 4-seater chairlift leads to Laufböden 2'226 m.

After 20 years of operation the web from Wang's 1975 has been replaced. The train then created was replaced by an 8-person gondola of the company Leitner in the summer of 2009. It leads to ford ( 1'522 m). From there, with a 4-seater chairlift on Gaffia ( 1,861 m) to 2,227 m on Pizolhütte, a mountain restaurant with no place to stay. On the site was from 1915, the Piz Sol Hut SAC Section Piz Sol with 50 places for overnight stays.

The Pizol area is marketed today, together with the neighboring region of Flumserberg branded Heidi country touristy.

Summer tourism

The Pizol is a popular hiking area in summer.

As a classic hiking in Switzerland is the 5 lakes hike. The hike starts at the Pizolhütte on Wangsersee. The climb to Wildseelücke at 2'493 m, from where you have a beautiful view to the Ortler and Piz Kesh, takes about an hour. Below the notch is on the Wildsee 2'438 m. From there leads the eye to Pizol glacier, to the Pizol and the Grey horns. After a short descent leads to the greenish Schottensee to 2,335 m. On the Schwarzplangg with 2'551 m you reach the highest point of the hike. Continue via Schwarzsee sports resort with 2'368 m in numerous ancient Steinmannli over to the fifth and final lake Baschalva to 2,174 m. The walk takes about five hours.

Winter tourism

The Pizol ski offers 40 km of pistes and 13 transport facilities.

The Pizol is a classic ski touring destination. The ski tour leads from the Pizolhütte on the Wildseelücke to Wildsee and from there to the south over the glacier to the eastern shoulder, where the depot is located. The ascent via the southeast ridge is partially insured. A total of 700 meters of altitude to overcome. The difficulty on the SAC - ski tours scale with WS ( little tricky ) specified.
