Common adjuster screw ( Planorbis planorbis )

The common plate snail ( Planorbis planorbis ) is a species of snail from the family of Planorbidae, which is expected to the subordination of water snails within the lung snails ( Pulmonata ).

Features

The housing comprises 5.5 to 6 turns slowly increasing. It is wide and 3.5 mm thick and up to 18 mm. It's almost planispiral, merely sunk to the bottom of something. It is brown and has growth lines on. On the upper outside a marked keel is formed.

Reproduction

The animals are hermaphrodites, but self-fertilization can occur. After fertilization, the animals lay egg capsules from 8-10, each with 3-30 eggs, which develop in 11-14 days. From the eggs hatch finished small snails. The life is up to 4 years.

Lifestyle and dissemination

The species lives in slow-moving, plant- rich waters, which should have a muddy bottom, however. The animals live near the shore to about 1 m depth ( but see Article Planorbis ). The animals come from off western to eastern Europe. You are lacking in southern Europe and range in Scandinavia to southern Norway and southern Sweden.

Similar Species

The species can be confused with Planorbis carinatus when shifted in some specimens of the keel to the center of the turn. However, the species can be distinguished in doubt due to anatomical characteristics (sex organs).

The species is classified as Near Threatened in Austria.
