Plataforma Solar de Almería

The Plataforma Solar de Almería is a center for the study of solar energy utilization. It was founded in the early 1980s and is situated on the edge of the desert of Tabernas in the Spanish province of Almería. The property has over 100 acres of terrain over 20,000 m² mirror surface are installed. There are various techniques, mainly solar thermal power plants, tested under practical conditions.

In response to the 1973 oil crisis, a project with two different power plants was developed by the International Energy Agency in the second half of the 1970s initiated for Spain the test site, today's Plataforma Solar de Almería, presented available. Involved in the project were Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA, the project was lead by the German Research and Testing Institute for Aerospace - now German Aerospace Center (DLR ). The trial operation began in 1982. Middle of the 1980s there was a permanent agreement between Germany and Spain on cooperation in projects at the test site.
