Plaza San Martín (Buenos Aires)

The Plaza General San Martín is a public green space in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. The Plaza is situated in the Retiro district. It is bounded by the Santa Fe Avenue, the streets Esmeralda, Arenales, Maipú, the Avenida del Libertador, Calle Florida and Calle San Martín. North are the Fuerza Aérea Argentina Plaza, Plaza del Carril and the Plaza of Canada.

History

Several governors had their official residences of the colonial period to the present Plaza San Martín. 1713 the land was sold to the South Sea Company, where they transacted their business slaves in the former governor residence. Later on, a fort and bullring was erected in the square. 1807 was the Plaza scene of the defeat of the British in their attempted invasion, after which the place was known as the glory field. 1810, after the separation of the city from the Spanish crown, were built on the Plaza barracks for the mounted grenadiers of General San Martín. 1813 the slave trade in the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata was abolished and demolished in the Slave Pens. 1824 San Martín went to Europe into exile, where he also died in 1850, but after his death, his importance for the Argentine history has been recognized and the French sculptor Louis -Joseph Daumas commissioned in 1862 to create an equestrian statue in honor of San Martín. 1878, on the centenary of his birthday, the San Martin was given its present name.

In 1883, by order of the Mayor Torcuato de Alvear the fort, demolished the arena and other buildings and planted the plaza. In 1889, the court by Carlos Thays its present form. By 1900, the area was a popular place for the upper class in Buenos Aires and so arose around him magnificent building, including the Palacio San Martín (formerly Palacio Anchorena ), the Palacio Paz and Palacio Haedo.

1936 put the son of Thays, Carlos León Thays, an esplanade to the monument of San Martín, about the same time the Edificio Kavanagh was completed on the east side of the square. Although around some of the older buildings have been replaced by high-rise buildings, this includes the Pirelli building from 1975, the place has yet lost none of its original charm.

1942 San Martin was declared a Historic Place ( Lugar Histórico Nacional Decree No 122 096 of 9 June 1942).

To the east of the square is opened in 1990 and Monumento a los Caídos en Malvinas to honor the fallen of the Falklands War.

2009, the open-air art exhibition United Buddy Bears was carried out on the Plaza San Martín, entitled Cultura para la Paz.
