Plean

Plean is a village in the Scottish unitary authority Stirling. It is located about six kilometers south-east of Stirling and northwest of Falkirk in central belt in the traditional county of Stirlingshire. In 2001, Plean recorded 1740 inhabitants. The inhabitants subject since the 1950s, only weak fluctuations around the value of 1700. In 1881, there were 369 people.

History

Plean emerged from the independent settlements and East Plean Plean. The former was located near the estate of Plean House, which was heavily damaged in the 1970s by fire. East Plean developed with the coal mining industry. There were there several mines, of which the last was closed in January of 1963. In 1922, twelve miners died in a mine accident, what today still remembers a memorial stone in Plean County Park. Furthermore, a quarry was mined in the sandstone existed.

Traffic

By the A9 Plean, the most important highway of the Scottish Highlands runs, on their way from Falkirk to Thurso. The M9 motorway leads directly north past Plean. Plean, once had its own railway station, which was about a kilometer north of the Scottish Central Line.
