Plougastel-Daoulas

Plougastel- Daoulas ( Breton Plougastell - Daoulaz ) is a commune in the north west of Brittany in the département of Finistère with 13,264 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

Plougastel- Daoulas located on the Atlantic coast in the Bay of Brest. The city center of Brest is located 8 kilometers (km ) northwest of Paris and about 480 km to the east (in straight line ).

History

From June 1940 until the summer / fall of 1944 Northern France was occupied by troops of the Wehrmacht. After the landing of the Allies in Normandy raged in the area the battle for Brittany. On 30 August 1944, the Plougastel Peninsula was liberated.

Economy

Plougastel is nationally for its tomato - and known for its strawberry growing the variety Gariguette. In Plougastel- Daoulas there is also a strawberry museum.

Infrastructure

The municipality has an exit on the highway E 60 (Brest -Nantes ) and in Brest there are more on the E 50 (Brest - Rennes). The train station of Brest is the end of TGV Atlantique to Paris as well as the regional train lines towards Rennes and Nantes. In Brest is the regional airport Aéroport de Brest Bretagne.
