Podgórze

Podgórze is south of the Vistula -city suburb of Krakow. Here was 1941-1943 the Krakow Ghetto.

In 1772 the area came at the First Partition of Poland as a part of Galicia to Austria. 1784 Emperor Joseph II granted Podgórze the status of a city with the freedom of trade, originally under the name Josef city. After the location on the other side of the Vistula Krakow 1795 was also Austrian, Podgórze was incorporated in 1810 to Krakow. But the Vistula River as early as 1815 was back to the state border and Podgórze broke away from Krakow. Only the incorporation of 1915 remained final.
