Poganowo

Poganowo ( German upper middle village ) is a deserted village in Poland in the Warmia - Mazury.

Geography

The deserted village is located in north-eastern Poland, approximately 35 kilometers south of the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast. About a kilometer south is Zalesie Kętrzyńskie, 1.5 km north Sławków.

History

Since 1438, the forest of the village to catch Castle ( Kętrzyn ) belonged. 1818 was the village of 16 houses with 113 inhabitants. The associated Vorwerk had three houses in which 24 people lived. 1939 lived here 329 people. After the Second World War, the area became part of Poland. Today Poganowo is desolate.

2005 were found during archaeological excavations in the area of the village remains an old pruzzischen settlement. The age is estimated to be the 4th or 3rd century BC. Among the found objects are ancient stone sculptures, so here an ancient place of worship is suspected. The sculptures are located since 2008 in Wojciech Kętrzyński Museum in Kętrzyn.
